Temporary Residence Permit in Bosnia and Herzegovina - Requirements and Procedure

Foreign nationals who wish to stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a longer period may apply for a temporary residence permit, provided that they meet the legal requirements for the relevant basis of stay.

Temporary residence may generally be granted for up to one year.

Common grounds for temporary residence

Temporary residence may be granted on different grounds, including:

  • employment

  • family reunification

  • marriage to a citizen of Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • education

  • business or other legally recognized purposes

The required documentation depends on the specific basis of residence.

Where is the application submitted?

The first application is generally submitted in person through a diplomatic or consular mission of Bosnia and Herzegovina abroad.

A foreign national may submit the first application directly in Bosnia and Herzegovina if they entered with a long-stay Visa D or if they are a citizen of a visa-free country.

Documents issued in a foreign language generally need to be submitted with a translation into one of the official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
